Healthwatch Derbyshire hears what local people have to say about health and social care services.

As an independent statutory body, we amplify the voice of the public to make sure service providers and commissioners listen to feedback and use it to shape and improve services and standards of care.

Recruitment is currently taking place for a Tobacco Insights Research Lead to join our team.

This role will be key in driving improvements as part of the national 'Stopping the Start' smoking cessation programme. This role will focus on gathering insights from local people across Derby and Derbyshire to understand their motivations around smoking.

Your findings will play a key role in shaping strategies towards a smoke-free society, directly informing the work of a Tobacco Control Group to improve public health outcomes.

Key information about the role:

  • Salary: £29,000 (full time) pro-rata for part-time
  • Hours: 30 hours/week
  • Contract: 12 months fixed term (subject to possible extension)
  • Closing date: Monday 2 December 2024 at 4:00pm
  • Interview date: Thursday 12 December 2024
  • Flexible working: The role is offered as hybrid working, combining both home working and the use of our office based in Milford, Derbyshire as and when required.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Engage communities in Derbyshire to gather insights on smoking behaviours, motivations, and cessation (stopping smoking)
  • Design and carry out workshops, focus groups, and other engagement activities
  • Build relationships with healthcare providers, commissioners, and the voluntary sector
  • Lead projects that incorporate public feedback into health service improvements focused on tobacco, smoking and vaping
  • Collect, analyse, and report data on public insights to inform decision-making
  • Collaborate with the Tobacco Control Group to improve health outcomes
  • Ensure diverse, hard-to-reach groups are included in research and engagement efforts
  • Produce reports and feedback for stakeholders, including the public and healthcare organisations.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Driving community-led engagements to support smoking cessation and control initiatives
  • Working closely with healthcare professionals and across the health and care system, to turn your insight into action
  • Facilitating inclusive discussions, ensuring all voices are heard
  • Analysing research to influence tobacco control strategies
  • Managing relationships with stakeholders to ensure that objectives are met
  • Helping to address health inequalities related to smoking
  • Preparing regular reports and updates for internal and external stakeholders
  • Contributing to Healthwatch Derbyshire’s mission of improving public health services through community engagement.

About you:

  • Good knowledge and interest in the health and social care system
  • Passionate about improving public health and tackling health inequalities
  • Experience with qualitative research methods (e.g., interviews, surveys) and analysing and understanding data analysis
  • An understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, and data protection
  • Ability to manage projects, meet deadlines and work independently
  • Confident speaking to a wide range of people in the community, including groups that are often not heard
  • Good computer literacy and use of Microsoft Office tools, including Teams and Outlook
  • A willingness to learn new software such as PowerBi
  • Good interpersonal skills which enable you to work effectively as part of a team and with external stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills for presenting insights and leading public discussions
  • Full UK driving license and access to a vehicle required.
