Experiences of people using the Derbyshire Wheelchair Service
In February 2024 we reached out to wheelchair users and their carers, to find out what they thought about the wheelchair service in Derbyshire. Following on from this we produced a report that shows the experiences of wheelchair users in Derbyshire.
Some people have mentioned issues they’d had with long waiting times for assessments and equipment deliveries. Others have said they’ve had issues with communication and updates. The report paints a picture of some of the problems people have encountered.
Commenting on the report, Helen Henderson, CEO of Healthwatch Derbyshire, wanted to thank everyone who gave their feedback:
"Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our survey earlier this year. Each and every piece of feedback helps wheelchair services to know what local people think and what they need to see changed.
The voices captured in this report are a powerful call to action for commissioners, service providers, and communities across Derbyshire. It is crucial that we prioritise the needs of wheelchair users and work collaboratively to address barriers they face.”
All the feedback we received was shared with AJM Healthcare and the Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board (ICB).
The report also features a series of recommendations aimed at improving wheelchair services in Derbyshire. These include:
- Calls for better assessment processes
- Better communication with people whilst they're waiting for assessments, parts and repairs
- More engagement with wheelchair users in their care.
We’re pleased that following our survey, AJM have taken on board the feedback from wheelchair users and put a plan in place. The plan shows what AJM aim to do, or have started doing, with clear dates to be achieved by.
By prioritising the voices and experiences of wheelchair users, AJM’s plan has shown they’re committed to positive change.
